Spotlight on an OSG Contributor

Steve Gallo is Lead Software Engineer at the Center for Computational Research at the University at Buffalo and wears a number of hats including leading their grid computing group. Steve has been involved with grid computing in one form or another since 2002 and, along with Jon Bednasz, provides support for the GRASE and NYSGRID VOs in addition to assisting users who are interested in grid-enabling their applications. He believes that users shouldn't need to deal with the underlying complexity of the grid (and computing in general) and is using portals, web services, and databases to hide as much of that as possible so they can focus instead on their research. He's currently working with scientists specializing in geophysical mass flow prediction, structural biology, and genetics in order to get their applications running on the grid.

Steve is involved in building the grid infrastructure throughout New York State to facilitate research in a number of domains, including science, engineering, and biomedicine. Now that the infrastructure is in place throughout the state, the group is working to recruit users to bring their applications onto the grid and develop a streamlined process for bringing more users to the grid. He has also started working with the National Institute of Genomic Medicine in Mexico to explore the development a grid infrastructure that will service Mexico's National Institutes of Health.

News from the Executive Board
Scientific Advisory Group meeting
The first annual OSG Scientific Advisory Group meeting was held June 12th with three participating members of the committee: Dr. Helene Armitage from IBM, Dr. Barry Barish from Caltech and Professor David Schwartz from the University of Wisconsin Madison. OSG presentations and a summary of the lively discussions that took place throughout the day are posted.

Please Upgrade to OSG 0.6.0
Sites who have not yet  upgraded to OSG 0.6.0: .It is essential that you upgrade before the next release comes out.

Upcoming Service Outage
The DOEGrids CA will have an outage July 5, 2007 from 9AM PDT to 1PM PDT due to a major software upgrade. The web browser based service ( https://pki1.doegrids.org ) and CRL updates will resume once the upgrade is complete. Because of a change in an internal interface of the CA, a related package (PPDG-Cert-Scripts) will also require an update.  The updated PPDG-Cert-Scripts package is expected to be available for installation by sites on July 6. An announcement will be made at that time.

New VDT Releases
There will be new releases of the VDT over the next few weeks in preparation for the OSG 0.8.0 release in August -- stay tuned!

Next Year's Program of Work
The OSG Executive Team has had a series of discussions planning next year's program of work. We have agreed to focus on the following areas: Operations stability; ability of users to determine status and source of failures to increase usability; metrics (accounting and presentation of); progress on data movement and management; and strengthening the customer support function.

Don't hesitate to contact any of the members of the team (et-osg at opensciencegrid dot org) if you have related requests or concerns.
